October 4, 2023 — The McKinsey Health Institute today announced an official commitment in support of The Kennedy Forum’s Alignment for Progress movement with the goal advancing more equitable and accessible mental health and substance use care in the United States.
The Kennedy Forum has laid out a “90-90-90” by 2033 vision that drives toward 90% of all individuals screened for mental and substance use disorders, 90% of those in need able to receive evidence-based treatment, and 90% of those receiving treatment able to manage their symptoms in recovery.
To advance this effort, MHI commits to supporting Alignment for Progress partners on developing a 90-90-90 vision roadmap and to catalyzing equitable cross-system action toward mental health for all.
“We are proud to support the Alignment for Progress by making a commitment to help realize The Kennedy Forum’s inspiring 90-90-90 by 2033 vision,” said Erica Coe, MHI Global Leader. “We are committed to closing disparities in access to high-quality mental health care, and we strive to help everyone find a path to recovery. We are excited to help catalyze the action required to make this a reality.”
MHI and other partners’ commitments were launched at the Alignment for Progress Conference, where MHI Director of Brain Health Kana Enomoto spoke about the history of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 Fast Track goals that supported the evolution of HIV from epidemic in 2013 to chronic disease in 2023. Kana also presented a Systems Mapping Tool co-developed by MHI and The Kennedy Forum.
In order to create meaningful alignment for progress, we must have a view of who and what we were asking to align,” said Kana Enomoto, MHI Director of Brain Health. “That’s why, several months ago, the McKinsey Health Institute joined with The Kennedy Forum to develop a ‘Systems Mapping’ tool to draw a holistic view of stakeholders, partners, and actors needed to make this change happen.”
This step reflects McKinsey & Company’s broader commitment to advance mental health equity and access in the United States and globally.

About the McKinsey Health Institute
The McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) is an enduring, non-profit-generating entity within the firm. MHI believes, over the next decade, humanity could add as much as 45 billion extra years of higher-quality life, which is roughly six years per person on average — and substantially more in some countries and populations. MHI’s mission is to catalyze the actions needed across continents, sectors, and communities to realize this possibility.
About The Kennedy Forum
Founded in 2013 by former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.), The Kennedy Forum leads a national dialogue on transforming the health care system by uniting mental health advocates, business leaders, and policymakers around a common set of principles, including full implementation of the Federal Parity Law. Launched in celebration of the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's signing of the landmark Community Mental Health Act, the nonprofit aims to achieve health equity by advancing evidence-based practices, policies, and programming for the treatment of mental health and addiction. The Kennedy Forum's "Don't Deny Me" campaign educates consumers and providers about patient rights under the Federal Parity Law and connects them with essential appeals guidance and resources.
