Masaru leads client work across multiple industrial sectors, including batteries, hydrogen, materials, and semiconductors. As a member of our leadership team in advanced industries, Masaru collaborates with clients across sectors on operational, transformational, and strategic initiatives. He also holds leadership roles in our Semiconductor Practice, Sustainability Practice, Battery Accelerator Team, and the McKinsey Platform for Climate Technologies in the Asia-Pacific region, working closely with management to define a plan and deliver impact.
Examples of his recent projects include the following:
- championing battery cell gigafactory industrialization and organizational transformation in Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe
- leading a corporate-wide transformation of a semiconductor manufacturer that includes operational improvements of wafer-fabrication facilities, final manufacturing facilities, procurement, and R&D
- helping develop a materials decarbonization strategy development with a major automotive OEM, including the creation of growth initiatives related to materials circulation
- supporting go-to-market strategy development for a battery component supplier
- guiding the growth strategy development for a hydrogen electrolyzer manufacturer
- supporting various due diligence projects related to materials, semiconductors, and batteries
Before joining McKinsey, Masaru was co-founder and chief scientist at a private-equity-backed cleantech start-up in the US. He has authored 20+ publications in leading scientific journals and served as a principal investigator on a research program supported by the US Department of Energy.
